Gamete and embryo donation may be the only solution to procreate in couples with absent sperms or ovarian failure enabling them to have a offspring without genetic link. It may also be applied to avoid the transmission of certain genetic conditions to the offspring.
Sperm Donation
The semen sample for sperm donation is obtained from the sperm bank. Only those samples that have been preserved for six months are used. Usually, a semen donor is matched for the color of skin and eyes and is screened for genetic and infectious disease before the semen is used. Semen from relatives and friends cannot be used for sperm donation.
Oocyte Donation
Usually, an oocyte donor between the age 21 to 35 years is selected. Known personnel are not allowed to donate oocytes. The oocyte donors are provided by the ART bank. At times oocyte sharing can also be done. All oocyte donors are screened for their ovarian reserve and infectious disease profile before using them as donors.
Embryo Donation
Is requires when both partners have a problem. Here the couple prefers to carry pregnancy rather than opting for adoption. Here we procure a sperm and oocyte donor to make an embryo for transfer. Ethical and legal aspects involved with gamete or embryo donation Known and transgeneration donation should be avoided because of the difficulty of defining the status of the child within the family. Screening of the donor is necessary in order to protect the recipient and the future child. Medical and psychological evaluation of the general abilities and intellectual capacity of the donor candidates is normally done. The process of information giving, with counseling concerning the implications of donating or receiving gametes, is essential to enable the donor or recipient to give his/her informed consent before the procedure.
